HELPING THE
CHILDREN OF SURINAME
(Continued from the home
page)
Most people felt that money
was more useful than things. Things tend to disappear or customs
officials demand fees that the recipients can’t pay. And
everyone said that sending money to individuals, even teachers and
principals, was not a good idea. Finally, my research led me to a
foundation, respected by all, that works with schools, especially
in the interior.
Stichting Projekten
Protestants – Cristelijk Onderwijs Suriname. It’s Christian in
name but non-denominational in whom and how it helps. I met with
two of the three women who comprise the management team that works
with a board. The women are the working arm of the board. Their
books are open, they carefully account for every penny they get
and spend, and everyone I spoke to had nothing but good things to
say about the group. The website is in Dutch: http://www.sr.to/sdgs,
but the women all speak English and they have an e-mail if you
have questions. sdgs@sr.net I met
with Karin Blufpand and Yvonne Caprino.
The foundation has been
working for two years on physically rebuilding schools and they
are now about to begin projects that will support the curriculum:
reading programs, small libraries in the classrooms, music, poetry
and art. Most of their money comes from partners in the
Netherlands, but it’s not enough. They are very open to
donations from anywhere.
The bank where the money
should be wired (bank to bank) is: De Surinaamsche Bank NV. If you
are sending US dollars, the account in Suriname is 04.37.204. If
you are sending Euros, the account is 04.50.162.
Karin asked that you send an
e-mail saying what kind of project you would like the money
to support. It might be a good idea if you followed up any
transfer of funds with an e-mail confirmation. And if you have
questions……..don’t send them to me. You now know everything
I know. Ask Karin or Yvonne.
And thanks.
